  • Pi Kappa Alpha Wins the First Annual Greenest Fraternity and Sorority Design Contest

    November 15, 2010

VCU Sustainability Committee hosted the first annual Greenest Fraterntiy and Sorority Design Contest on America Recycles Day which was on Monday, November 15, 2010.  Ten teams from different Greek organizations assembled their own sculpture using only recycled and reused bottles and cans.  Teams were given one hour to "creatively" and "sustainably" assemble a sculpture.  Members on the Pi Kappa Alpha team included Andrew Yi, John Ruiz, Robbie Evans, Josh Stafford, and Walter Worsham.  In one hour, they were able to assemble a bicycle sculpture using plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard.  The idea of creating a bicycle came from notion of Going Green, sustainability, and VCU being a biking community.  A plaque was installed on a recycling container by the Commons Plaza to commemorate the fraternity's achievement in January 2011.

  • AKL’S 23rd Annual Halloween Watch

     October 31, 2010

The Beta Nu Chapter of the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda at Virginia Commonwealth University (http://www.aklbetanu.com) is extremely proud to announce the twenty-third year of its annual "Halloween Watch" this Sunday evening, October 31, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Approximately 300 members of VCU's Fraternity and Sorority community (http://www.greeksatvcu.com), led by the men of the Beta Nu Chapter of The Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda will again help patrol the streets and sidewalks of Richmond's Fan neighborhood. Clad in this year's traditional Halloween Watch t-shirt, they will help to help keep and maintain a safe environment for neighborhood children to enjoy Halloween Trick-or-Treating. Money from the sale and sponsorship of the t-shirts that the students will wear will be given to Richmond's Safe Harbor Battered Woman’s Shelter.

The Beta Nu Chapter of the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda is the undergraduate chapter of the national fraternity, and was chartered in September, 1985. This year, 2010, they are celebrating their 25th continuous year of providing undergraduate “Men of Character” a superior fraternity experience. Continuing their emphasis of scholastic achievement, in 2010, Beta Nu created its Five Ideals Freshman Scholarship, named after AKL’s Five Ideals of Judeo-Christian Principals, Leadership, Scholarship, Loyalty, and Self-Support. It is the hope of the chapter that two incoming freshman each year will be awarded the Five Ideals Scholarship.

The Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda (http://www.akl.org) was founded on April 22, 1914 by a group of young men attending the University of California, Berkeley. Its birth, however, dates back to 1906 when a group of friends discussed the “need of Christian men for a place to live and study that was within their (financial) means.” Among their various national service projects are, “These Hands Don’t Hurt,” “Cystic Fibrosis,” and “Adopt-A-School.”
